Text Box: Text Box: Bethany Windham Engle attended Stephens College where she was selected as one of eight students invited to spend a summer in Europe studying art. She holds the Bachelor of Fine Art, Masters and Doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama where she began her teaching career at the age of 23. She established the Department of Art at Shelton State Community College, Alabama’s two-year college of the arts. She and her late husband, the sculptor Frank Engle, lived and traveled in Europe and often collaborated on art works and architectural design. Retired from teaching, she now spends her time caring for her rescued dogs and working in her Windy Hill Studios, located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She is inspired by the farmland and coastal regions of her home state.
She is a Contemporary Realist in her ability to merge the incongruent; a hidden meaning may be suggested in the clearly recognizable form, often evoking a romantic emotion both personal and universal. Windham Engle’s interest in drawing is evident in all her work, whether in acrylic, graphite, colored pencil or ink and whether the subject matter is a portrait, landscape, seascape or still life. Each piece is first conceived abstractly in terms of form, composition, value and mood.
Bethany Windham Engle’s work has been published in Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing, Art Galleries and Artists of the South, American Artist (a semi finalist in Acrylic in the 70th Annual Contest), Tuscaloosa Sketchbook and Alabama Magazine.
Bethany Windham Engle displays her work in The Gazette Gallery, 205-759-3091; located in historic Northport, Alabama and on her web site www.bethanywindhamengle.com. She is represented in many private, corporate, college and university collections. For purchases or commissions contact the artist:
